"take away" PIs

Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:12 am

I was wondering if there are plans to change the distribution of the PIs, away from the current 2-vendors-only way?

I would really like to have the possibility to just go to my favorite onlineshop and buy one, or even better: to just drive by where i usually buy my hardware, and buy one.

But i know that's still dreaming. What irritates me, from buying my PI at farnell or RS is that these are - for me - foreign vendors, and i have no idea what happens in case of guarantee, that the fees for shipping will be huge, etc

No plans at the moment.

RS and Farnell have offices in many places around the world, they are multinational corps.

Once the supply situation eases and bulk purchases become possible i'm sure some resellers will start reselling Pis. While their base prices will undoubablly be higher than RS and Farnell I would expect such resellers to be cheaper for single units in areas where farnell/RS don't have their own local distribution.

English is not my mother language, and if i wrote something inappropriate I'd like to know what it was, to be able to avoid this next time.

Sorry if I post it here, i have no way of writing PMs

well AFAIK any user can send a personal message, by going to his own user control panel (by clicking on his user name), but that is secondary, I have no idea why the moderator has used the "bad language" reason, except for that the tone of your initial message was quite hostile.
No there are only two points where you can buy Raspberry PI's, and that is from the two companies that also actually assemble them. These are two of the largest companies that sell and (in some cases also create) electronic devices, in the world, and they both operate worldwide, which is the reason why this non profit charity organisation went along with them, so that anybody (and any child) worldwide would be able to buy them, not just westerners.
There is thusly no possibility to just buy them on "any street corner", nor will this happen soon, if ever.
In this case the adagio "the customer is always right" doesn't apply, and so yes, you cannot always have what you want!
Sorry about that.

That post was quite a while ago so the mod involved has probably forgotten what the problem was. It's likely the post was edited to remove the offending phrase (which may have been accidental), or perhaps when the post was reported, the wrong reason was given. Either way I wouldn't worry about it.

my compose PM says
" We are sorry, but you are not authorised to use this feature. You may have just registered here and may need to participate more to be able to use this feature. "

and sorry, if "i dont want to have hassle with toll and mail, in case of guarantee or similar" is too hostile for this forum, perhaps I'll head over to the guys at hello kitty.

Lol, ok. what did i do to you to be that offended?
omg I say something evil about the - at the moment to me very annoying - way that the PIs are delivered?
If you want to be successful, apart from sending a few thousand machines to those guys who don't care about waiting weeks for stuff they have to order from 2 foreign country vendors, i think you should be able to stand more than just some arguing posters, who are NOT happy with this.
Or perhaps you are the one, to better head over to the hello kitty forum.

PS: I'm pretty sure this will a) be warned for "beeing not so very nice to the other kids" and b) be deleted.

Hi tommylee3k, I believe it was me who issued that warning.

If I recall correctly, you used foul language in the first few words of that quote, I can't repeat what you said originally as I have no record of it, but I imagine it was something along the lines of "what p***** me off...".

I am usually very careful about issuing warnings as I recognise that some people will turn hostile towards the mods as a result. A warning from me about bad language is simply to remind you that this forum is being browsed by youngsters, so it would be wise to write smart.

Hi Steve,
You're right. If this was my words - and i'm pretty sure it was - you're indeed right. This is foul language, and I think i really was upset, when i wrote it :)
I apologize for this.

I would have been less surprised, if I knew what the problem was. I just read the (changed) post, and i couldn't see anything wrong. This way, i thought the offense was _WHAT_ i wrote, and i couldn't belive that this is a forum, where people cannot say their opinion.
Good to see that this is in fact wrong.

thanks for clearing it
