License issue

Hi,
I'm new to this group and just entering because I've got al license issue when starting Mathematica.
When I start Mathematica I get the following screen:
$Failed. The Wolfram language kernel was not able to start due to license terms. For more information or assistance please contact Wolfram research.

I used a new NOOBS installation, as well as an update after removing the original installation.
No questions were asked about acceptance of some license using Wolfram software.
When starting Wolfram in the textbox I was asked for a licence and password. I saw that the generated MachineID was different fron the license in the license file in the version 10.0 directory.

Does anyone have a clou? I hope someone can help me out.

What model of Raspberry Pi are you running? A/B/B+/A+ or 2B?

I'm using the B+.
Registring at Wolfram does not work either.

Try this:
sudo apt-get -y purge wolfram-engine
sudo apt-get -y install wolfram-engine

Unfortunately this was also the first option I tried.
But it didam not help. May be I should create a new sd card.
Afaik no registration is needed at Wolframs site?

So when someone has an idea how to solve this problem I'll give it a try.

I'm using the B+.
Registring at Wolfram does not work either.

How is it failing to work ,.... have you tryed launching it from a terminal ?

When launching it from a terminal what out put is displayed if any ?

Hi,
When I start from the terminal, wolfram.
I get sometimes the editor mode where I can enter my expressions.
But mostmy, after I started mathematica I get the message in the terminal
Mathematics cannot find a valid password
For automatic web activation enter your activation key
Then it comes with the machine name and mathid, asks the activation key again and stops working

I did a clean install again and now it seems te work. The former install was also a clean one.
Don't know what went wrong, I'm happy it works now.

I have had the exact same problem occurring on my RPi2. I believe it triggered after I updated my Raspbian January 2015 firmware with rpi-update.
Wolfram in console would work but not Mathematica and I had not messed around with its files.

Purging and reinstalling wolfram-engine, also cleaning /home/pi related conf files did not work.
Only reinstalling again the Raspbian img got everything OK again.

My hunch is that Mathematica license is somehow linked to some machine ID which maybe is changing after modifying kernel files?

PS: contacting Wolfram through the License error message they kindly replied that Mathematica for RPi is supported by raspberrypi.org and to contact them for further info about this issue.

The serial number format sent by the blob has changed. The SoC info for the RPi2 is BCM2709, unlike the Pi1. You can use a modified PRoot to bind a modified /proc/cpuinfo, it works(TM).

There were some license issues recognized with earlier (pre Feb 03 2015) versions of Mathematica on the RPi 2. Check $Version to see if you have the latest (should have the Feb 3, 2015 date) and upgrade if necessary. If your still running in to problems, then the latest version isn't the issue.

Thanks everyone, the issue I was having was solved several days ago with the february apt-upgrade of Raspbian and/or a recent update available for Mathematica package - it's been working solidly since.

I am concerned about hidden costs behind the licensing deal with Wolfram. What do you get access to on Raspberry pi? Do you have access to the full Wolfram cloud system? Or is it a marketing ploy to get thousands of school-kids indoctrinated, and the schools paying the annual fees? What when they leave school?
Are you able to do the things that Wolfram talks about in his video on the Wolfram site without paying through the nose?
Can someone make a clear statement, please? Please.
While I do have dreams about this sort of data being available to everyone through an eye-screen headset (or better) all the time (Some people are already wearing blue-tooth headsets for their phones (aka that Dr Who episode!!)), I find the £15 a month it seems to cost to be prohibitive to even begin to think about using it.
We need all those young up and coming robotics scientists to have full and free access to this sort of technology, so that it can be developed to its full potential.

You get what you get. Wolfram spent a lot of time and money producing this software, so you are not going to get it (other than the version of the Pi) for free.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth is the phrase that comes to mind here. Yes, Wolfram want to get people interested in their product. No, you don't have to use it if you don't want to pay for it.

I'm not sure exactly what you get with the Pi version, but it is documented somewhere.

I opened Mathematica on my new pi2 and was shocked at how fast it was. You could now easily scroll through pages of commands and it was really great. You can do a ton with it!

Maxima is a good FOSS alternative to Mathematica:

though a license number 1234-1234-123456 is accepted, you still need a pwd to use wolfram. It quits whatever pwd you try. And mind you I am not trying to crack this, just to see if i can use it for one of my projects
so, having it pre-installed on the noobs image does not help much.

Perhaps related to some of the posts on this thread is the fact that Mathematica returns a licensing error unless the current user is a member of the video group. While this is true by default for the pi user, best security practices encourage disabling the pi user and creating an account with a less easily guessed username. Add all users who want access to Mathematica to the video group and things should work fine.
