PI 2 heatsinks

Tue Feb 10, 2015 3:09 pm

Hello,

I have just received my new PI 2 B and my heatsinks. (upgrade from PI 1 B)
No problem to install the two bigger heatsink.
For the little third one I have no idea where I should place it.

What is the location for the third heatsink on the PI 2 B ?

Dunno, I've never used any heatsinks. Find a chip that feels hot and try that one.

It shouldn't be required under normal conditions but my PI will be near a high source of heat. :?
Also I already have them from the PI 1 so let's reuse them.
Also the PI 1 was quite hot so it cannot do harm to put them !

Yes if you have the B+ or 2B 's photos I would indeed appreciate, thanks ;)

Without getting Into the merits or non merits of heatsinks, I think the idea of the 3 pack of heatsinks was for the original model B, one on the SOC, one on the LAN controller and one on RG2 the 3.3v voltage regulator (the three red spots on this image) Image

However the RPI B+ and 2 now use a switching mode regulator which would not get hot anyway..

Regards

Thanks then this is the answer. No need for the third one :P

I ll just "feel" as jamesh suggested anyway.
Too bad someone couldn't provide a heat map for the new PI 2 it would have been cool.
In the meantime I can only help with this :D

I'll bring my Pi2B to work tomorrow and take a heat picture with our thermal imager.

Make sure, if near a high source of heat, that the heatsink isn't working in reverse....

Stick it on the RAM chip on the other side of the board.

I can think of better places to stick it but can't tell you on a family forum.

From here
Although while idling the new Pi will not consume any more power than the previous generation of boards, when all four cores are being used the new board will consume more power and — due to increased leakage — will get much hotter. Hot enough that you might want to think about adding a heat sink, especially if you intend to overclock the chip.

Pi2B Thermal Image

The Pi was setup to launch straight into X, but as I don't have a HDMI monitor at work I couldn't really load it up.

I use the raspberry pi2 with openelec media software and the temperature goes up to 50°C after a few hours.
I insert 2 heatsinks and a fan, then the temperature goes down and is now between 33°C and 42°C.

I think that i place on the new PI3 board also the heatsinks and a fan.
