which soldering iron?

Sun Feb 01, 2015 2:13 pm

I've just spent over an hour in a freezing shed trying to get a solderpro 120 butane soldering iron to light and get hot enough to solder a switch onto a bit of wire.

I gave up after my wife accused me of making her into a shed widow and threatened to ground me.

So, can anyone recommend a good, reliable, cordless soldering iron that I can pick up and reliably go ssh ssh ccchhh with and just get the job done with the minimum of faff?

The cold shed might make it difficult to use a cordless soldering iron. You are going to need extra power to counter the heat getting sucked away in the cold. I just bought an all-in-one set up a couple months ago that is working well for me. Before this I has some of the same problems you describe. Now I can dial in the temperature I want and it tells me how hot it is. It gets to the target temperature within a few seconds and does quick work in my shop area that I keep at around 65 F (18C). It also sucks much of the fumes away which is nice when you have to get close to your work. I am not a soldering expert, but I'm convinced that having a good soldering iron makes the chore a lot easier. I figured the hot air rework capability of this unit might come in handy someday too.

This is what I'm using:
