Leaving sd and micro sd cards in raspberry pi after shut dow

Sat Jan 03, 2015 4:45 pm

So I wanted to ask
Are we supposed to leave a sd or micro sd card in the pi after shutdown or not. Will this create any problems ?

Yesterday I downloaded a meta package for the is I was using before turning the pi off and leaving the card still plugged in.

This morning when I started the pi it wouldn't boot at all

It doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter if you leave the power supply connected.
Not booting isn't related to leaving the SDCard in the Pi.

You may do what you want with it, after power is removed, it doesn't really matter, except perhaps the theoretical point that the springiness of the contacts in the card holder might be reduced eventually (over years).

But a software shutdown should be executed then several seconds of waiting are needed for the card to finish its business, before powering off. Do not power off or remove the card in a hurry!

read my boot problem sticky if you have trouble boosting.

Maybe mahjongg's post is not explicit enough. Shutting down by merely removing power has been known to corrupt the file system on the card.

Indeed that makes sense

But last night I used the shutdown command and waited before the pi shouted down before pulling out the card.

The only light that was on at the time of the pullout was the red one

That's the correct procedure and won't be any part of the reason you can't boot.

First thing is read the sticky thread, you may be able to rescue your existing system.
Second is check that the SDCard isn't a cheapo, crappo Chinese fake .(one that reports more available space than it's really got).
Third buy a new branded, full price SDCard and build a fresh copy of NOOBS on it.
