Kano + Adventures in Raspery Pi/Minecraft

Mon Dec 29, 2014 11:12 pm

Hi --

I'm am trying to help my son (7) who is getting interested in programming and is very interested in Minecraft!

My son got a Kano computer for the holidays and we are exploring it and enjoying the process. I'm very interested in getting the two books Adventures in Raspberry Pi and Adventures in Minecraft for him but I'm not sure if these are compatible (?) with Kano. I'm afraid I am not very computer literate myself so I may be misunderstanding some things but is it the case that the Kano OS is different from the normal Raspberry Pi OS (Rasbian?) even though the hardware is a Pi. Would these books still be useful?

Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated.
thanks
Jon

Well, directly taken from the Adventures in Raspberry Pi :

"This book relies on you having Raspbian installed, so select Raspbian and click on Install. "

You may be able to use Kano OS if you have Scratch installed, this is because the book, along with other stuff, teaches how to code your own angry birds game with that program ...

About the other book, I don't know ...

You have two options, you either visit this link and download the two books that there are specifically to Kano OS, they are different from the two you mentioned but if you really want to use them then you are better off with a clean installation of the latest version of Raspbian, but maybe you can get away with Scratch on Kano OS.

Have fun with your son :)
