Using PS4 Controller cable to Power Up the Raspberry Pi

Fri Dec 26, 2014 7:37 am

Hey Guise, I just got my Rasp Pi today as a Xmas present, I got just the board not a starting pack so I need to buy the rest of the things tomorrow(when the shops open).

I was just wondering about, how to know what power supply I should use? Should I use my PS4 Micro to USB and power up my Rasp Pi with my Laptop? or should buy a different Power Supply what goes to the wall socket?

My intentions are to use it for as a Cheap webserver at home and prolly later use it as a Server to loggs some details from my home connections.

I got some info from Reddit
"USB 3.0 (which the PS4 has) charges at 900ma @ 5V. USB 2.0 charges at 500ma @ 5V." is that too much or too low?

Thank you in Advance!

500mA is a bit low, but should work as long as you don't plug in any heavy-current USB peripeherals (like some WiFi adaptors or unpowered hard disks).

900mA is fine for most uses.

Make sure the cable is not too thin. The thicker the better :)

If you can, try measuring the voltage on the Pi itself. Very carefully put a DC Volt meter on pins 2 and 6 of the GPIO and it should read very close to 5V.

The other option is to buy a decent PSU and USB cable for your Pi. One with a current rating of at least 1.0A (1000mA), preferably about 2A is good (except for the cheap ones which lie on the labels).

Bad power is one of the main causes of problems with a Pi.

You are thinking of doing the same thing i was thinking of doing. Well don't i know it seems strange but i used the ps4 micro usb on my pi and it heated up quite hot after 10 mins (i don't know if it was just a one off) i unplugged it as soon as i noticed. i brought a actual pi micro usb and it's now fine.

The point is you have two choices take the risk and use theps4's micro usb or be safe and use a pi micro usb.
Happy to help btw
