Lack of games

Thu Dec 25, 2014 8:09 pm

This has most likly been discussed before somewhere. But i've come to notice a lack of eye-catching games for the pi, now i am entirly aware of the pi not being meant for games but it would be nice to have 1 game for the pi that's high quality and that's the game most well known for the pi, i am aware of free civ , minecraft and doom and also that quake arena game. I'm refering to a equivilant of what minecraft is to the pc/mac/linux that game that stands out like a neon sign in the dark.

So i was wondering if any one had heard of any big games in development for the pi or any ports people are working .e.g. here's an unlikly example someone attempting to try and port prison architech over to the pi. Stuff like that or just your thoughts on this.

Sorry for any mistakes made in punctuation, spelling and so on occasionaly when i type imess up so sorry :D Please reply

1. Most games are written for MS Windows, if only because there are more Windows machines out there.
2. Games with a lot of "eye candy" rely on GPUs far more powerful than everything the Pi has put together.
3. The fact that the Pi can play Minecraft (even as limited as the Pi version is) is fairly astonishing in itself.
4. If you want a fancy game on the Pi...write one.

The Minecraft Pi Edition is ofcourse not very feature-packed (essentially like the pocket edition) but is programmable through the Minecraft Pi API.
Ever had a play with that ?

Here are some free articles on that topic :

Take a look at the PiStore there's a few games there.

I think people are doing down the GPU capabilities. It has similar performance to the original Nintendo Wii, which has some pretty good games! I've seen the mobile version of Need for Speed running on a VC4, and that's pretty good 3D. And try the Quake 3 port!

It really just need people to port the code/convert to OpenGLES to get a lot of earlier stuff going well.

Indeed I have experimented with OpenGLES, used from QT5, rendered straight into the frame buffer, no X running, and it performs very well.
