How to switch from Raspbian to other OS?

Fri Dec 12, 2014 6:17 pm

I got a raspberry pi b+, installed noobs in the sd card and installed Raspbian OS. But the raspbian won't handle vlc player. I want the pi to use like a media player. So i want to switch to other OS included in the Noobs.

You can not add/remove OSes with Noobs System Chooser, you need to start from the beginning, also you will need an Internet Connection via Wired Ethernet

You can completely trash the Raspbian install and replace it with RaspBMC or Openelec.

Shutdown. Reboot while holding the [SHIFT] key. That brings up the recovery system and it should allow you to choose one of the alternatives. You WILL need to wire your RPi to your home router/switch to get either of those OS'es installed.

If you have another computer you can put the SDCard in that, save the contents and put another image on it. If you want to go back then do the same.
If you have another SDCard you can install something different on that and switch between the 2 by shutting down, swapping the SDCards and rebooting the RPi

Note that to use another computer to save and swap RPi OSs you must use image (.img) writing and reading software, just copying files wont quite do.
