You can't. Why do you need that info?

We would like to know the state of RPi to stop it and start it. Sometimes I need to stop it.

You ping it from another machine, if it responds, its running.......

But it may have been sleeping, wakes up to service the ping packet and then goes back to sleep....
A ping reply proves nothing....

Since when was the Pi capable of sleeping ?. It's pretty pointless if it did, it uses almost as much power shut down and still connected as running. We're not talking PC here.....

Wifi adaptors are not Pis.
