SD Card gets hot and starts smoking [Resolved]

Fri Nov 28, 2014 12:53 pm

Hi,

I'm a newbie and I was trying to do a NOOBS setup on a brand new16GB SanDisk Ultra microSDHC UHS-1 Card by following the instructions on:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup/

I downloaded and extracted the ‘NOOBS (offline and network install).

I inserted the SD card in the SD card reader of my laptop where I formatted the SD card using SD Formatter 4.0.

I copied the extracted files/folders to the SD Card.

I safely ejected the SD card from my laptop.

I setup my Raspberry Pi Model B+ - plugging in the monitor, mouse and keyboard cables.

I inserted the SD card into the Pi and then plugged in the USB power cable but nothing happened.

I unplugged the power and checked if I had inserted the SD card properly only to find that the SD card had gotten very hot.

I had another SD card that already had the operating system installed so I put that into my Pi instead to check if the Pi was okay and it booted perfectly.

I also have a Raspberry Pi Model B so I put the SD card into that and the same thing happened - i.e. nothing but the card got extremely hot! Again when I replace the card with another pre-imaged card there wasn't a problem.

I then tried to put the original card back in the SD card reader on my laptop where I could get a smell of burn and there was some smoke!!!

My question is - did I do something wrong which caused this or is it possible that the card is just faulty?

Thanks in advance for any help offered

Most likely a faulty (and probably fake) SD card. However, as a precaution, it may be worth investing in an external, USB-stick-like card reader/writer** for future use, just in case your laptop's built-in device has been over-stressed or is damaged.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Hi thanks for that,

I returned SD Card to the shop in question and got a replacement, bought an SD card reader on the off chance that I had damaged my own as a result of all of this, but glad to say that at the moment my laptop's SD card reader seems undamaged, and
I have managed to image the new SD card successfully given the instructions on the Raspberry Pi website.

So it's white smoke from me not black as on the last occasion - issue has been resolved!!!

Thank you :D :D :D

I've marked the topic [resolved] for you,
