Wed Nov 26, 2014 12:38 pm

Hello dear community.
I need to replace the the usb and Ethernet connector to straight one, not angled.
But it wont work, i thought that i broke something when was desoldering, bit i checked trice - all fine. Then i soldered back original HanRun and it work perfectly.
Tell me please, what can be a problem here?

Plaeas post a link to a datasheet or supplier's web page for the units you want to install. It is possible that the pin-out is not the same, and certainly for ethernet sockets there are optional internal components.

You need a connector with magnetics inside IIRC.

Oww... yes, looks you are right. I've opened hanrun connector and there is magnets filled with compound.
But is usual and connector with magnets not interchangeable? I thought with magnets one is a just esd safe.

Nope magnetics are needed. Often they will be separate to the Ethernet connector but with the Rpi it is more space efficient to use a connector with built in magnetics.

There is a great explaination of why they are needed on StackExchange http://electronics.stackexchange.com/qu ... ly-coupled

This thread sounds like:
I tried to replace some guy's heart and it didn't work. What could have gone wrong? I followed the instructions I found here:

http://openheartsurgery.fordummies.com

Is there something missing from that site?
I.e., I really don't think that if you have to ask on a support forum about this sort of thing, you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Note that I have no idea about this stuff; I haven't wielded a soldering iron in years…
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Or maybe in an old piece of equipment..

Edit:

And if you are asking about this on a forum you are exactly the right kind of person to be trying this stuff.

Hello guys. I need your help gain: i did not found straight connector with magnets, so i had desoldered magnets from my old Ethernet pci card and glued it on old rpi connector place.
I had connect 1, 2, 3, and 6 pin on rpi to my switch via magnets and nothing happend. Then i connect 1,3,4,6 pin (i see roads and caps on that roads, so it might be data) and FDX, LNK, 100 leds light full time after load, aven without connecting to switch.
Tell me please what i'm doing wrong?
Regards, Rechmp.

thats obviously not a compute module, so wrong forum!

moved to more appropriate place.

I think you FUBAR'ed it.

not all "magnetics" are the same, you need one that is identical to what was in the original MAGJACK.

mahjongg thanks.

aTao yeah, there is lot of stuff in the Internet, and there is no problem to order it 7 months ago, but for now i cant do it, cuz of sanctions (Crimea). Also, i need 1 pc for diy, and i think even straight one will be too high for my project.
So any remote help will be accepted.

So, i did it.
Problem was in wrong transformer connection (got wrong datasheet). I've used transformer HST-005PR from dead TP-Link TF-3239DL PCI Card.

So for now it work perfectly and I'm on one step closer to my project completion.
Hope it help someone.

What the heck are those stupid heatsinks for? You're not running this in the Gobi desert are you?

The pins you need for FastEthernet (100Mb) are: 1,2 & 3,6.

Nop. For raspberry on pcb side it its 1,3 & 4,6 as you can see on last pictures. Pin 2 connected with 5 and looks like it is CMT transformer pin.

Past time that pi was used on over 1.2 load with tranciever in small enclosure, so it becomes too hot and laggy (on turbo) even with fan. Heatsinks helped me and temp fall from 90°C to 35°C.
For new project heatsinks useless, but i think no sense to unmount it, because they glued with thermal conductive glue.
Or You are asking about heatsinks on rtl tuner?
