Worrying HDMI problem (with youtube)

Sun Jun 24, 2012 3:02 pm

Yes, another user with HDMI issues you say, but I hope to get some advice before I RMA this back to RS Components... if they accept it.

Anyway I've tried all the solutions here regarding the config.txt from hdmi_safe=1 to config_hdmi_boost=7 (the max I believe?)

I've instead putty'ed into the thing and updated the firmware using hexxeh's tool, then followed the instructions at http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... =28&t=6911 to get some diagnostics.

Here's what I've got:
/opt/vc/bin/tvservice -s gives
state: HPD high|DVI mode|HDCP off|composite off (0x120016), 1280x720 @ 60Hz, progressive

cat edid.dat
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ ÑyET.5x.`
¦VJ%PT¥kÀ©À@ÑÀaÀ³:q8-@X,E+!ÿ9B900082026
ý2LS
üBenQ E2420HD
8#ñN
# g
8,:q8-@X,+!:Ðr8-@,E+!q X,%+!Ðr ,%+!¼RÐ ¸(U@+!»

So whatever runs the display system correctly identifies my monitor (BenQ E2420HD) but otherwise it just simply displays a rather scary 'flickering' problem where the output flashes in and out, and when it does flash in, the output has 'corrupted' colours. The youtube link below shows the problem.

So... should I just RMA it, or can my Pi be saved? :(

I forgot to mention - I've also Wheezy beta installed. I now have 55MB on my card after overwritten the previous Debian installation. Is this normal?

Hi,
your edid file looks garbage from here. Have you tried another monitor and/or another hdmi cable?
As you've got something on the display its highly unlikely to be a problem with the pi itself, but probably the config.
Can you post the config.txt that you were using when you made the video.

How do I read the edid.dat properly? Sorry, I'm a Windows user primarily so I just quickly used a cat on the file which brought up the garbage (but also showed my monitor's name, which I presumed was the only thing I was to gain from that file).

The cable and monitor both work fine with my Xbox 360, so I'm still pointing fingers at the Pi itself.

My config:

# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
disable_overscan=1

Oh wow. Turns out it's my monitor (BenQ E2420HD). I tried it on another HDMI TV and it displayed perfectly.

The monitor is my main screen for PC use - I don't want to replace it right now. What could be the problem?

I've noticed that when I'm switching over to HDMI channel the sound from the PC connection is still playing (the monitor has audio I/O ports). I then am unable to switch channels until I turn off the pi or pull the HDMI cable. Could this provide a clue as to what's happening?

I've also seen 2 more reports of BenQs having problems with Pi... damn, why did I get the wrong monitor...

Nothing immediately springs to mind.
Note that "hdmi_safe=1" does set "config_hdmi_boost=4", so "config_hdmi_boost=7" would get ignored.

Try commenting out everything else in config.txt and add:
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
config_hdmi_boost=7
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=1
disable_overscan=0

just to check whether a higher boost would have helped.

Tried that, problem is still there, although I'm getting a picture slightly more frequently. So quite possibly not enough power for HDMI.

Well, at least it's not the Pi hardware that's the issue here. Good thing I can SSH into it and use it from there.

I guess you could try with different hdmi_mode values. Maybe forcing some resolution (like 1080p) will work. The list is on http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt

Same problem here with the same monitor, BENQ 2420HD. Crap.
