Does this make any difference in the WIFI?

Mon Nov 24, 2014 7:01 pm

Hi,

I'm kinda new in this, just bought the Pi B+ and now I'm looking for a good WIFI USB for it, checking some references in http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters I found that the model RT5370 is good and "cheap", but when I'm checking it in amazon for example, I see two options:

1. With Antenna: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mini-Wireless-8 ... rds=RT5370

2. Without Antenna: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Wirele ... rds=RT5370

Is there any difference between these models and their performance?
Anyway if you can recommend me any other WIFI model, please, I'm opened to options! :D
-----------
Other question, I'd like to make the "case" for the Pi B+ myself, but I'm not sure about what materials are good or not, I mean, a case made with some materials might warm up the Pi and affect performance.. isn't it?

Best regards,
Thony

Probably the range of the adapter with antenna is better.
And for the case as long as there are some holes in it, and it's not from metal, it should be fine. ;)

Hi Laurens, thanks for the answer.
If I use the antenna, should I power it with some USB hub?, I mean, I like this one because I read that it will work without any USB hub to power it.

With the B+ (and a good enough power supply) you can configure the USB ports for higher power devices.

Edit /boot/config.txt add

Code: Select all

max_usb_current=1
save the file and reboot.

I bought a fancy bluetooth adapter with an impressive looking antenna a while back. Didn't think much about it until I dropped it one day and the antenna fell off, revealing it to be made entirely of plastic with no connection to the USB chipset inside. I suspect many 'cheap' wifi adapters use the same trick.
