Fri Nov 21, 2014 9:43 pm

On kickstarter.
A chunky, slow, low-res and expensive RasPi based tablet. But it is hackable and linux

More expensive than Jolla tablet which got funded in 2h https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/joll ... /x/4177444

And that Jolla is using the same components as Windows 8 x86_64 quad core Intel Atom tablets. At least some do support Linux, although Windows 8 or Android are much better suited for a touch screen display (vs classical Linux desktop window managers).

But that's an intel powered tablet. Which is about as interesting to me (YMMV, of course) as a plate of cold jellied eels and lutefisk.

Do you have a thing against Intel as a company or are you doing something that an Atom cpu isn't suited to, but Arm6 is?

The special feature of RasPiTab is the internal expansion space. The kickstarter mentions add ons that you might expect to be part of a tablet anyway, but someone may come up with some exiting add on.

Still, given the thickness many add ons to standard tablets could fit in a custom back. Eg FLIR ONE thermal camera.

Interesting project. But who is the target market?

People who want a hackable tablet? I wonder how many of them there are?
It's got off to rather a slow start.

I think the market for it will be very small. I can't think of a good use for it so far.

It reminds of LittleBox, a RasPi based desktop PC.

It can run Windows 8 and all of its apps. It supports OpenGL and can behave like a normal PC. But if you want ARM then there are even cheaper ARM Android tablets (but can't do Linux). And even those to some extent may use Arduino or other microcontroller boards via USB-OTG or Bluetooth-Serial.

It's cool to have a hardware project, but it's even better if it's targeted for a wide range of consumers and has sane features/$ ratio.

Is it simply a Pi (actually the Pi module) with the Pi camera and a lcd display in a tablet shaped box?

Plus a CM module interface board and battery, yes.
So unlike a normal tablet it has internal GPIO and some expansion space inside the case, which is easy to open up. It also has two full-size USB host sockets on the bottom edge.
