Raspberry TARS, iA Robot of Interstellar movie

Mon Nov 17, 2014 10:33 am

i'm sure i'm not alone to think how we can make a robot like TARS with Raspberrys.
and of course WE WANT TO MAKE IT !

maybe it's impossible but maybe not if we are several to do it.

maybe it's just a funny topic or not
why not try to build it ?

when i'm watching a dragonfly, i see wonder of nature. So tiny but so smart, like the raspberry. I dream that all of us (makers we are) find a solution to make an iA powerfull, smart and human-like just with a couples of Raspberry !

smart software, less power needed

are your ready to dream ?

That robot seemed oddly inpractical in the movie,
apart from its fast "wheel" mode in the water

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.

Dream big, work hard and maybe one day, we will have a true AI on a raspberry pi...

How does it move? (I haven't seen the movie) It looks like four bars each of which pivot independently in the centre...

First we can work on that, or a sort of that

Ravenous, get a cinema ticket and go see it !

The join/pivot point varies (since it's not "real"). Here's slow walking

and fast wheel rolling mode:

Oh I see. Not just rotating sections, but translating/prismatic joints too. (At least eight degrees of freedom, kinematics geeks.)

It should be possible to do a simple one with four heavy duty servos perhaps (and run the power from a wire to save the expense of batteries). Changing the configuration of the joints would be far more expensive and heavy, leadscrews might do it...

The walking action would probably not work like the example above; it doesn't have the momentum of an upper body to keep it moving forward so it might need more action in the "knee" joints; and there might be more sideways sway. (But it would work, given really good control.)

Robot gaits is a really interesting subject. Also there are some nice snakebot designs out there which are even more configurable, but that's going off topic! :lol:

yes !
it think we can do "something like" for the "easy way"

with jarvis and siri-raspberry -> http://jasperproject.github.io
with a kinect for SARAH -> http://connectingstuff.net/blog/reconna ... le-kinect/
and ROS > http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspber ... ng-System/

the "hard way" will be to build a real AI could interact with human even if TARS doesn't know the sentence before he hears it.

Has anyone started yet on trying to tars or are we still at the point of discussion because I am all for trying to make tars. The only thing I am concerned about is how it works. Also if we want to stay true to the movie we have to make it out of steel I believe which will add an extra 75 lbs. to it.

for the moment i have no time about making TARS.
BUT i want to do it and find time.

I have a 3D printer and a CNC (and a friend got a factory where we can bend steel).
We can discuss and draw some plans if you want.

I think if we make a BIG tars or a small tars

I don't know how it works, but for now we can think about just walking and speaking with voice recognition
