Battery powered Pi

Sun Nov 09, 2014 9:19 pm

I was wanting to add a rechargable battery to my raspberry pi. How would I do this?

My second question is, is it safe to power the pi using a rechargable battery. When I use my pi for a while and it then gets quite warm. My project makes the pi more portable so the user will obviously put it in their pocket. Is it safe? Won't the pi overheat?

Use one of those "USB power bank"'s - they work great for powering a Pi

If you don't over clock, you should not over heat.

You should not try to run an RPI direct from a battery, it will not be a suitable voltage. Too low won't work reliably. Too high will fry.

USB Power banks serve up the regulated voltage that RPis need.

Batteries with leads (particularly home made) should not be carried in pockets. The heat MAY be ok in normal use, but a short circuit on a battery supply can generate a lot of heat very quickly (enough to melt connecting wires). Some systems will have adequate protection and strong enough cables, some are mechanically encased in a strong enough housing. Many home build systems will not be designed and built to a standard that will prevent fire risks under fault conditions. A pocket is a hostile environment and damage is far more likely than anyone expects. Consider contact with coins or keys, drops, spilt drinks or rain. All these could cause overheating and serious injury.
