B+ does not start

Thu Oct 30, 2014 5:42 pm

Hi,
I have just been given a new Pi B+ with NOOBS card and RPi universal power supply. I haven't got a keyboard or monitor so I used a HDMI cable to attach my laptop to the Pi. Then I attached the power supply to the Pi and swithched it on. The only which has happened is that there is a red light on the Pi but nothing has appeared on the laptop screen.
What has gone wrong? Please help.

You laptop's HDMI is output only, you can't directly use it as a display for the Pi (or any other computer).
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

Plus or minus the expensive Lenovo laptop that costs £1400 and does have a HDMI input.

That depends on the laptop.

Apparently some of the newer ones have HDMI input.

I've no idea if the OPs laptop has that capability.

Thanks for the replies. I have now tried it attached to our wide screen TV but nothing happens.

Hi Dougie, I read that link and the only thing which stands out is the bit about improper shutdown. When I switched on the PI I got steady red and some green light, but as I couldn't get anything else the only way I could switch off was at the socket. Could that affect the SD card? It came fully installed ready to go.

Do you get any pictures on your TV?
What happens if you hold the [SHIFT] key while you boot?

If you don't have a keyboard (or mouse) you will not be able to (easily) set up your RPi using NOOBS.

(It is possible by modifying the content of the SD card before it is booted for the first time - see the documentation here.)

I'd suggest trying to see if you can get temporary use of a screen, keyboard and mouse to help you get your RPi set up with an Operating System - after that you can access it over a network connection and you don't need the local io devices any more. Alternatively, if NOOBS is not helping you on this situation, abandon it and directly image an OS to your SD card on some other system. Documentation is here.

I noticed the TV has a DVI adapter to which I attach the HDMI. Could this be the cause that nothing is happening?

1) does your laptop work with that connector on the TV
2) with no keyboard you will not be able to setup the RPi via noobs [withoout a lot of messing arround]
3) you will be able to setup raspbian via ssh as long as you plug it into the network with a NIC
4) start again, be simple and report all the steps

The laptop does not work with that connection which is good news anyway. I was given a keyboard so now I need to get a HDMI monitor from somewhere.
