Noobs multi os query

Thu Oct 23, 2014 8:23 pm

Hi all, I have just purchased a 32gb card with intention of having raspbmc and raspbian on the same card. Does noobs half the avalible space to both os's or does it give more room to raspbian?

I think I am right in saying that it uses what you might think of as 'policies' that are defined in the partitions.json file in the directory for each installed OS. This is mentioned in the documentation for installing a custom OS, here.

So can this be edited in the lite install version of noobs? Basically I want a totally minimum install of xbmc with rest of card devoted to raspbian. Just where I intend to put it won't allow me to change cards easily!

Help! 0 MB Avalible

I have a question. I bought a 32 Gigabyte Micro SD Card, and when I load NOOBS, it says that there are 0 MegaBytes available. I tried reformatting it, but it doesn't work. Still, it doesn't respond! I'm trying a solution that requires me to input a command: http://www.gadgetsbot.com/raspberry-pi/ ... ree-space/. Do I have to go into Recovery mode? And what is the login info? User: Pi Password: Raspberry doesn't work.

Oh yeah, I have reformatted the card all over again, for both NOOBS and NOOBS Lite. I have downloaded the Raspbian image, reformatted it, and paste it. It failed with a kernel panic. If this problem can't be solved, do I have to use an older version of NOOBS and/or the model?

Deep breath... too much going on here...

NOOBS is an Installer. It does not have a username or password.

The files that make up the NOOBs Installer have to be copied onto an SD card that contains only a single FAT-formatted partition that occupies the entire card. exFAT is NOT an acceptable substitute. [It isn't clear to me what the specific point is at which utilities choose to use exFAT as their default format - it is somewhere 'between' 32G and 64G.]

The link you have posted relates to creating additional spare file storage capacity on a system that is already up and running - it is not applicable to your situation.

If you want to change your target from NOOBS to a directly-installed version of Raspbian then be aware that you cannot simply 'paste' the image onto an SD card. It has to be 'burnt' or 'flashed' using a dedicated utility such as Win32DiskImager.

Short documentation for NOOBS is here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... n/noobs.md
Full documentation for NOOBS is here: https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/bl ... /README.md

Documentation for installing Raspbian is here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md

And finally: the username and password for Raspbian - whether installed directly or via NOOBS - are documented towards the end of this webpage: https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup/ (they are not the ones you have tried)

PS: Having seen your other post on this topic. It is now clear that NOOBS is blocking progress because the card has not been pre-formatted correctly. This should not be an issue for 'flashing' Raspbian directly. If both methods of installation fail I would begin to suspect that you have an SD card whose actual capacity is not as marked on the packaging.

password, and username are all lowercase! Linux always differentiates between cases!

Pi, is NOT the same as pi !

Formatting should only be done with the official SD-associations formatter, but it is important to enable both full format (not quick format), and enable the resize option, or format won't clear any partitions on the card. The "formatter" must remove all partitions, and format all resulting space to FAT32!

Formatting the card in a photo camera will also do that, but windows formatter won't (as will most other programs fail to remove partitions).

if you format a card of 64MB or larger, then after using the official formatter the card is formatted a exFAT, which won't work! So afterwards you need to use another program to reset the card to FAT32.

it is all explained in various sticky post.
