Monitor mode and RTL8188CUS

So I have been trying to use Kali 1.09 (or whatever the most recent version is) on my model B and can do just about nothing with it. I cannot scan for networks with "airodump-ng wlan0" or any other network scanners. My main issue is that I cannot enter monitor mode no matter what i do. So my questions are
1. How can I enable monitor mode?
2. Is it possible to use my adaptor for MITM attacks?
3. Is there a better adaptor that can create APs and enable monitor mode?

Your WiFi adapter doesn't support monitor mode, it's a hardware/device driver restriction. You need one based on the RT5370 chipset.

I bought this one for general Wi-Fi connectivity for the pi. I later learned about all the fun stuff you can do with monitor mode and found that it works very well:

One thing I've not tested is its maximum range though. I figure a tiny dongle may have a tiny range so that may be worth checking if you're planning to do some war driving.

Sometimes, (sometimes !) Ebay vendors will tell you what chipset their nondescript wifi adaptors use in their description. The manufacturers name and model number don't mean very much, because they change the gizzards without reflecting it in the model sometimes. The RTL8188CUS and the RT5370 are mainstays at the cheap end of the market.
