Raspberry Pi Wifi Signal Range

Sat Oct 18, 2014 5:47 am

I'm planning on using Raspberry Pi as a local web server for the examination system that I want to develop, the device that will fetch the data from the web server will be an android tablet, the problem is I don't have any idea if the Pi can cover the whole building with no problem. I know the signal is dependent on the wifi dongle/router that is connected on the Pi, but I'm going to ask anyway.

Unless you give some idea of the size of the building and number of floors then its anyone's guess. The range depends entirely on the dongle and nothing to do with the RPi, but you will probably want to run the wifi dongle on an external USB powered hub as some of these dongles can use a full 500mA alone.

As you use Android, there is a free Wifi Analyzer, load this on your Android phone/tablet and then move around your building, this will give you idea of the signal strength. Position and height of the dongle can also help with range, but best position is found by experiment. Most wireless networks on 2.4GHz use channels 1,6 and 11 so you will want to use a different channel. If you buy a dongle that supports dual 2.4/5GHz you may get wider range, but be aware that 5GHz can sometimes be absorbed more rapidly in buildings, depending on walls and surfaces. I've seen some gold patterned wallpaper that was a very effective screen at 5GHz but 2.4GHz was less attenuated. Hope that helps.

There seem to be 10 or more apps with that name available on the Goofle Play Android Apps store. Can you say who the author/publisher is for the one you recommend, please?

As long as a piece of string, the type of dongle is a relatively minor player in the 1001 things that affect range.

The android Wifi analyser I use : https://sites.google.com/site/farproc/wifi-analyzer
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

Can anyone suggest the dongle that can cover most of the building or maybe there is another way around on delivering the data from the web server? Except for hosting the server online.

The system will be used on different schools here in my place that's why I need to consider a lot of things to make this work.
