Boot the Pi to a command prompt.
sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
addto the end of the one line in that file, DO NOT split the line.
Wire the eth0 with a cat 5 to you laptop (no x-over needed).
Reboot your Pi and use PuTTY to connect to 169.254.3.14
sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
add

If you set up internet sharing on the windows machine and leave the Pi with default settings it should connect to the internet through the windows machine as well, but you'll need to interrogate the windows machine to find the IP address its doled out to the Pi to ssh into it. Far easier to connect the Pi to the router.
