I'm working on my first installation of my new pi and set up a wireless connection. When I try to connect to it using "Metro Putty" it boots all the way through until I type startx. Then it all hangs. Anyone have any suggestions?

You can't use the Xwindows desktop through SSH (well, you actually could with X forwarding)
Easiest way to access Raspi desktop is to use vnc server on the Pi with vnc client on your windows machine.
