Dual OS's on Same SD Card

I really hope it is alright to post this question here. I was given my very first Raspberry as a Birthday gift recently and was wondering if it possible to have a dual OSes on the same SD card. I only ask because I have Raspian on 1 SD card and I recently found another 16g SD card for the price of an 8g so I had to pick it up because I had wanted to try doing openelec to try and do a media player of sorts and was wondering if it would be possible for there to be 2 OSs on the same card in case I see another OS I want to play with.

Yes, if you use NOOBS as the installer, you can select multiple OS for installation, and NOOBS will start with a bootmenu.

alternatively you can manually install multiple OS, and use an utility called berryboot for the boot menu.

Ok I don't know if Noobs has Openelec as an option but I will definitely Look into that berryboot. May I ask if anyone has any suggestions of other OS that are good to try out ( I don't know what I want to do with this Raspi so I can't tell you where Im headed with it). I do know I am going to try and control my light switch using a Relay board at some point in time.

most people will use Raspbian, as its simply the default linux OS for the PI, but really any OS can be used to do this, having a good GPIO library helps though (and raspbian has it), but have a look at RiscOS too.

I've got a question the XMBC that people are refering to is RaspMBC the same as in will it use the remote app that you can put on your phone (For when I do connect to Wifi on my raspberry) along with playing movies straight from USB ?. I was pondering doing Openelec and Raspmbc.

I use openelec. Raspbmc was based on raspbian and is a tiny bit slower than openelec, which was built from scratch.

I only ask about the XMBC because I like the ability to control it using my Wifi Smartphone with an app. Can you do the same in Openelec ? This is also why I am wanting to put both onto the 16g Sd Card

You should be able to do the same in openelec.

Ok because the App you can was for xmbc I can always try and see.
