Boot issues

Sun Aug 31, 2014 8:16 pm

Hi

This evening I tried to boot up my new Pi and it wouldn't. There was a solid red light and sometimes a orange/green light would flicker every so often. There was nothing appearing on the screen, so I tried turning it off at the mains and turning it back on. The issue was still there so I then decided to go on the forums and have a read of the Pi not booting guide. I unplugged all my USB devices and the Pi was booting again. The issue I have now is that the screen keeps flickering on and off, one minute I see the Pi boot code, then it disappears. I am not sure what is wrong. I am using this Pi for XBMC and want to use 3 USB devices, a Mini Wireless Keyboard, a Wi-Fi dongle and a Media Centre Remote.

I am not entirely sure what is wrong, so I would be very grateful for some assistance!

Try measuring the voltage between TP1 and TP2. What power supply are you using? Did you try flashing a new SD card?

Hi there

I am not sure how you measure the voltage... Unfortunately, with the case I have, it's designed so once the Pi is in, it stays in. I am worried I could damage the Pi and or case when trying to get it out to test the voltage. It's a Pi Hut 5V 2A PSU, and I haven't reflashed the SD card.

Hi there

I had the same issue with the screen flickering on my main Pi a few weeks back. It couldn't cope with two OS's and extra devices even with two hubs connected. Is there a way I can use another form of power supply with the main power supply at the same time to give enough power for the board and the extra peripherals? E.g. A USB Power Bank.

Or am I best getting a hub?

I don't think it's a fuse issue or anything because as I said earlier I experienced the same issue a few weeks back with my main Pi because it was overloaded and just couldn't cope.

There shouldn't be a need for a extra power supply. If the USB doesn't work, then get a powered hub, but that should not affect the pi.

A RPi can only run one OS at a time. Whatever is/was causing a problem has nothing to do with two OSs

*UPDATE*

Hi there

It seems this issue is worse than I thought. My main Pi, has suddenly decided to fail on me with a solid red light and won't boot.

I am starting to wonder if there is something in Raspbian causing my Pi's to not boot properly.

In need of some expert assistance!

Update: sorry about this, luckily my Pi's have just come back from the dead, I think they must have had a blip. I am going to back them up now incase something like this happens again.

The current B+ doesn't have TP1 and TP2, it has some tiny pads on the underside that my old eyes can't see......

On the plus side, its a lot less likely to need the test points, its much more forgiving about power issues.
