Camera/Raspistill preview while connected via SSH

Thu Aug 28, 2014 8:33 pm

Hello. When I connect via SSH using MobaXterm using the console or lxsession I cannot see a preview of the camera's view using raspistill -p.

This makes it very tedious to set up a timelapse without having a monitor attached. Not sure if this should be in the advanced or begginers section. I am somewhat computer savvy (savvy enough to figure out an SSH connection I guess?)

Thanks for your help in advance!

PS. Check out a timelapse I did of pond invertebrates (actual tank is 8cm across, so quite the macro view) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OevgAJ4ikJ4

This has been covered a number of times.

The camera preview is a superimposed bitmap over the normal Linux framebuffer, this means that the framebuffer has no idea it is there, so it cannot be used in a remote desptop/SSH /X type of way.

You'll need to stream video from the remote machine in order to see what is going on.
