Changing the default username and password? - Debian Squeeze

Hi, I am new to the Debian software and cmds, however I was hoping one of you more experienced users could help me out! I would like to change the default username from 'Pi' and its password to something a little more personal. I am aware I can change/create the root password but this is completely different.

Also if anybody could help me out, is it possible to edit the boot script to add colour to specific opening lines. for example
Username: Pi
Password: ******

Not sure about changing the colours of the login prompt, but you can add a bit of colour to the shell: http://www.marksanborn.net/linux/adding ... rompt-ps1/

Use passwd command, then enter your current password default "raspberry" then enter the one you want to change it to.

Hi Bredman,
As another user trying to learn these things, hopefully you can clarify some bits for me.

- Does this make the new user, identical to the Pi one, or does this one have different sudo rights?

The follow up question to this is:
How would you then remove the old user account?

Finally, are there any other accounts on the default RPi which should be removed or passwords changed to ensure only you can access it?

Basically, this is something which most users should do really, particularly if they then go on to using it on their network, open ports to it etc for remote access etc.

If you are using the wheezy beta, there is a root password (root) which you might want to change.

That seems perfect, I'll run through it a few times and try it out. Hopefully we can include this/or similar in the MagPi (with credits and formatting adjustments where required to fit the space).

Let me know if you are happy for it to be used under the Creative Commons Sharealike 3 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/) which the MagPi uses. If not happy with that, then I can re-write it in a suitable format and link to your site as the source, if you'd prefer.

I'm happy for you to do that. A link to or mention of RasPi.TV would be nice. I've thought about offering to contribute to MagPi. The only reason I haven't offered is that I'm not sure I could commit time to it regularly enough to be useful. But if you want to use that blog post, that's a good start.
