Do I need a powered USB-hub?

Wed Aug 27, 2014 12:51 pm

I own a Raspberry Pi since yesterday evening. Got it running with Raspbian and I love this little machine already!

My next step is get BTSync running and attache a hard-drive. I'm thinking about buying a WD Elements 1TB

My question:
Can I plug this hd directly in the RaspberryPi or do I need to put a powered hub in between?

#I used search but could not find a clear answer.

Which raspberry pi are you using. The raspberry pi B+ has enough power to power a HD, but any older will need a powered USB. If you run into any power problems, you can buy a powered USB hub.
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't.

Make sure you use a 2A power supply, and turn on the high current output for USB
