Raspbian and RetroPi boot on same SD

Mon Aug 25, 2014 9:07 pm

Rather than have multiple SD cards, I'd like to have only boot info on one SD and choose which to launch at start up. I've read through the HOWTO: Move the filesystem to a USB stick http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 29&t=44177 and plan an attempt this week for Raspbian. Is this possible to do with RetroPi as well? If I can pointed in the right direction I may be able to eventually figure it out. I don't have a lot of experience but having fun trying.

An easy to use tool is to install BerryBoot and install raspbian from the list and then install retropi from the following link: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 78&t=54488

BerryBoot needs a special type of img that has squashfs, and the following image is in that format. Put it onto a USB and let BerryBoot install it for you. You can have the OS on the SS card or a USB stick. Good luck

Edit: link to BerryBoot: http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot

Great. I will take a look at BerryBoot. If I understand correctly, I will need to convert Retropi's file system to SquashFS or should it be Rp's entire .img file to SFS?

I can spend some time on this during the week but it may appear too deep for me  so may need to wait till the weekend.

I welcome any other input or instruction. Thanks all!

Why BerryBoot instead of NOOBS?

Why use any funky boot manager, it's easier to pull an SDCard while the system is reset and have one OS per card.

The link that I gave you at the top is an already made version of retropie with squashfs

Two points:
  • 1) In terms of my own usage and opinions, I pretty much agree with you. I've played with NOOBS, and although I find it cute, I didn't really find it all that useful in the long run.

    2) My question was actually intended as serious, not argumentative. I know BerryBoot came out first, but I never got around to trying it out. Then NOOBS came out and seems to be the more "official" solution, so I am (seriously, not argumentatively) curious was to why some people continue to use BB.

Berryboot is the grandfather code for NOOBS. NOOBS is specifically designed so that you can easily create a bootable SDCard using simple commands and functions that are built in to Windows systems (assuming you can read and understand the plain English instructions).

I've never tried Berryboot as I have no need for it, I've tolerated the perils of NOOBS on too many ready to run images (Wolfson, FUZE Basic, etc.) that I've used.

The best thing I've found, so far, is raspbian-ua-netinst for a simple clean install of just the stuff I need rather than the stuff that the Raspberry Pi Foundation (& others) think I would like to run.

Only knowing the Windows world, I thought it'd be cool to go from one environment (Raspbian, Web Server, XBMC, RetroPie, or what ever the Pi is doing today) to another within the same SD card while the file system for each resided on a dedicated USB drive. I am certainly a 'keep it simple' person but enjoy learning Linux and the realm of the Pi.

I did DL NOOBS but since it didn't have RetroPie, I came here. I may still try BerryBoot but can see in the end heading the multi-SD route. Of course I could do multi-Rpi's instead.... :D

Good discussion. Thanks all!
