Running programs on Debian

Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:03 am

Hi All,
Up and running but a sufferer of the power internet gui issue.
Just wondering if its possible to run midori or chromium which i managed to install from the command prompt without launching the gui? All i get is can't launch display errors.
Can you run any programs from here or are you forced to load the/a gui?
Thanks

The errors launching a GUI are probably caused by a full SD card.

To check how full your SD card is, enter the command
df /

If you see anything above 95% on the right, you need to delete some files or get a bigger SD card or extend your partition (if you have a card bigger than 2GB).

No, any X11 apps (such as chromium or midori) will only run after starting X11 with 'startx'
From what I've read, your original problem might be fixed by user a higher-current PSU, or using a lower-current keyboard & mouse.

You can run lots of programs, but no GUI programs. Python works from the command-line for example, as does the text editor "nano".

There's even a couple of Internet browsers you can use (but don't expect any pictures): "lynx" and "links". Use "sudo apt-get install links" to install it, and then the command "links" to run it.

Thanks all!
I resized my partition anyway as i was at 97% so it wasn't a wasted time.
Yep chromium still wont run but no issue, planning on getting a new mouse as i can currently run with either my gaming mouse or wireless keyboard but not both. (i wasn't well prepared so this was all i had)
