Composite and Audio on B+

Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:40 pm

Hello! Haven't got the B+ yet but I wanted to know of you can use the composite jack and the audio jack at the same time. What I want to do is make a portable version of my media center and want to use the B+ I need the composite since some hotel TV do not have HDMI. I also need audio. Is there a way where I can put the video to the tv and then have the sound play throughout either the tv or speakers. Another question: should I use a sound card to improve quality or not. Any help is appreciated!

That obviously depends on whether the analogue audio from the B+ is "high quality enough" for you or not...

Yes, if you have a suitable cable you can have simultaneous composite video and stereo audio from the 4 pole 3.5 mm socket.

Can we use a standard 3.5mm audio jack to get sound from this? It appears that would short the composite to ground in the connector, i assume this is ok (which is why the connector was designed this way?)

Post 3 on a standard 3.5mm jack is ground, then post 4 is added in this are for the composite so using a standard audio jack will short these 2, again i assume by design?
Many Thanks
Ashley

Your 2 questions to me appear to be the same......
You can use a 3 ring plug in the RPi audio jack for audio only. It will short out the video signal but that is OK. I don't think there is video signal there anyway when using HDMI.
Be sure to fully seat the plug in the jack.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Yes, the fourth connection (S in the TRRS of the plug) is for video and the circuit is designed so that it will not be damaged if shorted out - even if trying to output video at the time.
