Network Help

Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:58 am

Hi all,
Total beginner on linux but can generally turn my hand to most things 'computerish' pretty quick.
My pi arrived in Sydney today and i have it up and running with the beginner image of debian from the pi website.
Managed to set the time zone which seems to have updated using an internet time clock as i had the network cable plugged in and the time and date updated at the same time as putting it to gmt+10.
When i run the graphical interface midori can't find the internet and just returns the 'can't resolve hostname' page.
if im outside of the graphical interface on the command prompt i can ping my router (although maybe using the windows command isn't the correct way as the only way to stop it pinging is pull the power out...)
I'm i use the LXterminal in the graphical interface the same command gets "connect: network unreachable)
What am i doing wrong im sure its something simple?
Thanks.

A lot of people report that the network connection is lost when the startx command is entered.

Troubleshooting is ongoing, but the most probable cause is a weak power supply or power cable.
Check here to see if you have power problems

And to stop the ping command (or any running command) Press Ctrl and c

Hi thanks thats nailed it already!
I pulled the plug on my mouse, the only one i have usb is a gaming one that has internal lights.
As soon as i did google loaded.
Will put it back into my pc and deactive the leds using the firmware and see if thats good enough!
Thanks.
