Latest Firmware / Kernel - LED activity lights on after halt

I just went through the whole sudo apt-get update / upgrade thing in order to make sure my image was compatible with B+.

Now when I issue a sudo halt command the ethernet activity lights remain on even after it has fully shut down (according to what gets displayed to an attached monitor)

The is new behavior - as the prior image I had all the lights would go out except the power indicator.

What's more the device remains "pingable" while it is fully shut down (seems crazy to me).

I've confirmed this on multiple Pi's so it's got to be something with the new firmware (I think).

This is a bit of a problem for my use as I distribute a headless device that is often used by non-raspberry pi "hackers". My "safe shutdown" guidelines up to now was to describe how they can notice that only the power light remains on.

I no longer have that "safety" it seems.. unless there is some new way of shutting down the Pi and having the ethernet activity lights go out as before.

Anyone else see this behavior?

Any way to make this "better" (without adding a "real" power switch as an add-on)?

I'm sure I've seen this mentioned in another thread. Something about missing turning off the LAN951x chip during shutdown. It is going to be fixed soon.

FWIW I seem to have the same problem with my B+, but I haven't updated the firmware for a few days.

Thanks for the info and confirmation of the behavior. I spent a little time searching the forum but did not find the key phrase to look for. Hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

It is actually fixed now.

I just tested that it still happened yesterday with:

I've just ran rpi-update on my B+ and even after a hard restart the LAN lights are still on after sudo halt. Also I didn't get 10 flashes of the ACT LED. Perhaps that update hasn't bee released to mainstream updates yet.

Very odd.

I notice my vcgencmd version reported a very slightly later time than yours.

I've just tried again, with a different power source and a screen connected. Still the same behaviour and the text stays on the screen.
The last couple of lines are

That sounds like a distribution (or kernel) issue. It is what you get if the shutdown sequence ends with "halt -f" instead of "poweroff -f". Otherwise the last message, which you do not have time to read, should be "reboot: Power down".

How are you shutting down, and what does /etc/default/halt say?

It's a recent Raspbian image (I can't remember which), upgraded to Jessie and had rp-update run on it on my old B. I've run apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade, then rpi-update again since then.

I'm using either sudo halt or just halt as root.

/etc/default/halt is

In wheezy, "sudo halt -f" (immediately) software halts, whereas "sudo halt" (eventually) powers off. Perhaps jessie has fixed this, so that you always get the behaviour you asked for.

Do "sudo poweroff" and "sudo halt -p" still work?

Yes, halt -p and poweroff both work as expected.

I can't see anything in the changelogs about the change in behaviour. I'm sure it was ok until fairly recently on an A and a B with Jessie.

I've found a Debian bug report for it. Apparently the /etc/default/halt file was only supposed to control the behaviour of shutdown -h, not of the halt command. That has now been fixed. I suppose I'll have to get used to it (or set up an alias).
