Weird physical ethernet port issue

Tue Jul 22, 2014 3:24 pm

Hi all,

I believe my Ethernet port is faulty due to the following:
Plug in cable (tried multiple) completely and I get no network connection (no lights, just PWR and occasional ACT)
When I plug it in half way in a very specific way I get full and stable network connectivity (tried full TV season without hiccup)
I also checked the pins and everything looks in mint condition. The port is soldered solid as well.
Does anyone know how to potentially fix this?

Thanks!

According to your explanation it seems that the problem is with the connector. It might be that a small particle is inside it (shake the RasPi if something falls out). Otherwise you'd probably need to replace the connector.

Best wishes, Ivan Zilic.
Running out of GPIO pins and/or need to read analog values?

If within warranty, return it instead of replacing the connector.

If you really want to replace the connector, be aware that it is more than a connector. The pins that are soldered to the PCB do not go directly to the contacts in the socket. This jack contains the "magnetics" which are often external to the ethernet jack.

The very first production batch of RPi Bs had non-working ethernet because someone procured the similar looking item that didn't contain the magnetics.

... which may be a problem - I haven't been able to find a source of compatable connectors. Plenty without magnetics, plenty with different pin-outs, but nothing that's definitely (or even possibly) right.
I even took one off a broken Pi to help someone else out.

So do you, Ivan, know of a source?

Unfortunately, only retired RasPis.

Thanks for the tips! Seems like I'll have to RMA the Pi as there are no loose things and it's still within warranty. I don't have other defective pi's to get another connector from...
