Battery Pac as an external USB power source

Fri Jun 27, 2014 1:06 pm

I will go on holiday next week and was going to take with me my Raspberry Pi and my external hdd to watch some films..

However, the power from the raspberry USB wont be enough to drive a keyboard, mouse and my USB disk and maybe my Wireless adapter, so this is what i have in mind

Linocell (Battery)Powerpack 5200 mAh ---> Out 5v and 1amp through an USB cable

now the Idea is to connect it to a USB-hub, like this one

and then connect everything to it. and connect it to the Raspberry Pi USB-connector.

My questions:
1. Will this work? I dont want to destroy the PI (shortcut or burn the USB chip or the mobile charger)

2. If the above question works, then whats the maximum amps i can connect to the USB. I got an Battery Powerpack 12 000 mAh that delivers 5v 2,1A output on the USB connector that i could use instead of the one above

EDIT: Keep in mind, Im not asking if i can run the Raspberry through the USB-hub, im asking if i can use my disk/keyboard/wifi stick etc with the setup above and still has the raspberry connected to the mobile charger (Output 5v and 1amp ) without destroying the pi (shortcut or burn the USB chip or the mobile charger)

1. 1 amp may not be enough to power everything. Hard drives need quite a bit especially at startup (spinning the platters).

2. I'd be fairly optimistic about the larger pack. Just try it now and see. The risk of damage is minute.

You can power the hub from the battery, you can power the pi with a USB-A to microUSB plugged into the hub. The problem with back powering then simply goes away. You've got 5V0 at 2A1 available (until the battery goes flat) so it should be OK.
