Forums not working properly

Tue May 06, 2014 10:11 am

Hey. The forums (i.e: these forums) are bugging up - they wont let me login, as apparently I have "exceeded my maximum number of login attempts" (i.e: 1). To post this topic, I had to browse to this, attempt to post a new topic (without logging in), login, login again (see below), "return to previous page", login again, and bla bla bla. I will not easily be able to post a reply to this - help? Email me at mrpi321@gmail.com.
I'm happy to help.

It's a well documented problem.

Yeah, the real problem is that if this goes on much longer (and all indications are that it will), people are going to start accepting it as "the new normal".

And start concentrating on the workarounds - already we are seeing this, people are suggesting things like "Greasemoney" and "Lazarus - whatever". I, facetiously, suggested a hardware solution using (of course) the Raspberry Pi as the basic guts of the mechanism.

Don't forget to copy your text to the clipboard every time, before hitting submit (as I am about to do now).
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

I don't think it is a "browser thing" - I think it is more likely a "status of your account" thing.

It seems to affect certain users, regardless of browser.

Not sure why I'm one of the lucky ones, but I guess that's always been true of me.

I have had the same problem, but it only exists if you keep logging in and out all the time. If you select the option to stay logged in, then there will be no issue - it worked for me. But not if you are using a shared computer, of course!

I used to be able to stay logged in for weeks or even months at a time, but I have had to log in several times over the last few days. So I think something has changed to make sessions expire much sooner.

(Whether that is related to the captcha change or just a side-effect of spammers turning over more sessions, I have no idea. Simply failing to log in from elsewhere does not appear to invalidate my existing session, so I assume the problem is not due to password guessing.)

There have been some recent changes that appear to have had some unexpected side effects. It's being looked in to.

I've been looking in to it. Think I know what's causing it - and have alerted our web hosting people, currently waiting to hear back from them on the issue.

If it's of any help - I have been getting this too - but only the first time logging in from a different system: IE on windows PC / Midori on RPi / Safari on iPad. Also had the problem again after an upgrade / forced reboot of the windows PC (new version of IE).

I've recently ran out of Easter eggs so I for one am glad not to be repeatedly reminded of chocolate (or lack thereof )
