Please help electric car project

Sat May 03, 2014 6:34 pm

Hi, i am converting a diesel clio in to a fully electric daily commute car and i have a small problem, i would really wish for the software that overseas the battery management system to run on a raspberry if possible, because the car has a double din screen radio with rca video imput and works with the raspberry

This is the software i would like to run if possible
http://www.123electric.nl/index.phtml?category_id=6 (the standard edition)

I would like to know if you think it is possible :) and go from there forward
Thanks and check out the project if you find it interesting

I'd guess that the answer is no, the software you are looking at is designed for a windows operating system, the Raspberry pi runs on a Linux based system.

Hi Gasper, ;-)

You might try to run it under Mono. According to my brief introduction to this system, the software is nothing but a front-end. Therefore, I don't expect that it is very demanding from processor-power perspective (read as: RasPi might be powerful enough). Most likely, the application just reads raw data from USB port and displays it nicely on the display... ?

What crossed my mind is a bit out of scope of this forum - how about converting USB to wireless (Bluetooth or WiFi) and you'd then use your mobile phone to view the data ? [joke mode on]In case of WiFi, each passenger would be able to monitor the parameters on his/her phone[joke mode off].

Lep pozdrav, Ivan Zilic.

Yes it is a simple program but lets you adjust some vital settings like charge times and currents
(http://www.123electric.nl/uploads/image/dash2.jpg)

They are stored in the master unit so it works with or without the gauge screen or a pc. If i could just get the gauge screen running on the pi that would be awesome because it saves me a lot of cutting up the dashboard and installing new ones. But sadly i am more of a hardware guy and have just a basic understanding in linux and have no clue how to write my own program let alone a graphic interface. I will try with mono but in the end if it comes to that i will go with a xp system and use my pi for a nas :)
And as for the wifi :) i really like the idea but the car has to be autonomous independent of the driver ( dad doesn't own a smartphone :), yet ;) i actually own a transformer tablet with windows but the thing is so big that it covers the hole front console (talking about first world problems :P ) so the pi is my last option.
Thanks for the advice, i will try and keep you posted.

Hi,

For your info - after yesterday's post I sent a question to 123electric if the USB protocol specification of their product is available to the public.

Buy el-cheapo smart phone/tablet and put it on the car's key keychain. ;-)
You could implicitly get also a kind of car alarm system (or I shall say car navigation-prevention system)...

Best wishes, Ivan Zilic.

Go it...
According to its content, the BMS-Controller should contain FTDI's FT23xx (or similar) chip, because the communication nothing but via serial port. You can see the magic by opening a simple terminal program (eg. HyperTerminal), set port parameters to 2400 8N1, and when you type $ character, the controller responds with encoded two-lines data containing voltages, temperatures, RTC, capacity, etc.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. The company behind that controller, Albertronic BV (KvK-nummer 29036339 0001) no longer exists, according to the KvK...

Guys thenx for all the help but i have manged to get my hands on a WAFER-LX board that supports XP so there goes my problem :)
I will try with the hyper terminal because you know, curiosity :D and suspend the pi project for a while because lack of time, my deadline is approaching and there are many things to be done , after the car becomes road legal i have all the time in the world and it would be just awesome if i had my own program with a custom interface  so i will continue when i have the time.
Special thanks to Ivan, when the car is on the road i will contact you and buy you a beer :)

Enjoy life, Gasper

Huh... :?: Well,... they still promptly reply to emails (got another today with additional protocol details)...
Anyway, thanks for the information.

Odd.

I noticed the fora on a number of their projects were overrun by spambots since beginning 2013. So I checked their (Chamber of commerce) status.

Ah well, they might have moved on to a new company and maybe are just to busy to update their websites with info as mundane as distributors and KvK numbers 8-)
