Very interested in how you get on with this, i want an anpr camera activated gate opener for my drive but a ready built set up is like £3K! And much more fun to DIY anyway and a great project for a RPi with so many uses.

Thanks, I am looking forward to getting the camera settings right for day and nigh. Once I have done this I can work on the plate recognition engine running on the pi too. I will be keeping the blog updated on a weekly basis. I will also be adding a link to a kickstarter page in the next few days to help finish the project. I need a more poweful infrared illumination source and and a matching filter and to build a better working model.

Amazing project! And very similar to the ANPR solution that I've been working on, using a Pi + Camera Module as an affordable high resolution IP-camera and a PC for the heavy ANPR computing.
I'm gonna give Visec a go and see how it fairs against SimpleLPR http://www.warelogic.com/
But may I ask why you are using an IR-filter? Letting in both the IR and visible spectrum would give more light which equals better night time performance.
I'm really looking forward to see the ANPR software running on the Pi. Are you allowed to disclose which company you've been in touch with?

Stopping the visible spectrum will stop the blinding affect from headlights
