Strange HDMI issue on LG Plasma TV

Sat Apr 26, 2014 6:13 pm

Hi, I just have bought an RPI model B and I'm very happy with it. There is a strange HDMI issue though and I haven't managed to fix it yet: On my old LG PG6000 42" Plasma TV (1024x768) the screen is always totally red-saturated. I tried swapping cables, even HDMI ports on the TV, but no joy.
The RPI works totally fine with my Samsung 32" Full HD TV and with my 22" LG 1680x1050 monitor, the problem comes only with the Plasma TV. Any idea how to solve it? I'd really like to use the PI as a mediaplayer moving my current noisy HTPC to another room and using it as a NAS, but I have to overcome this HDMI issue first...

Have you tried just 'hdmi_safe=1'? That would probably be a good starting point.
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

Of course I did. It's the first thing I tried. Other than booting in a 640x480 resolution, it didn't change a thing. Screen always red, all the time...

If only I were psychic then my response might have been more helpful. :D

Sorry, didn't mean to be rude. I apologize if I gave you that impression.
Well, I guess I'll have to spend a little more time investigating this issue; as I said before, My RPI work like a charm on every other TV /monitor I own. Strange indeed...

Not at all. It genuinely made me chuckle. I tried to show that I wasn't offended with the grinning smiley, so here's another. :D

Strange indeed. I hope you get to the bottom of it. :)

Do you have an XBox or PS4 or sat receiver? Something that emits an HDMI signal?

Do they get a good picture using the same HDMI cable with the wonky TV?

Trying that gives you a chance to isolate the problem.

Very odd. white == white but black == red.

For white to display, R, G, and B = 100% For black to display R, G, and B = 0%.

Seems that for some reason red is on all the time.

Check your cable and connections.

Hi Dougie. Yes, I also have an HTPC that works fine, a Kindle Fire HD fine too, both of them via HDMI connections. Tried 3 different HDMI cables, every single one works perfectly with other equipment. The RPI works totally OK with these cables connected to another TV set (Samsung 32" FullHD)

Hi richard. Cables are OK, I'm absolutely certain about that because they work perfectly with other equipment on the Plasma LG and with the RPI when connected to another TV set...

Maybe you have a defective Rpi?

I don't think so, since my RPI works perfectly fine with another TV set and with my PC Monitor.

Another poster back in 2012 had a problem with wrong colours via HDMI, and 'hdmi_force_hotplug=1' fixed it for him.

I realise that it's a bit of a drag as your patience is probably starting to wear a little thin by now, but it would help if you could show us exactly what you've tried and failed with so far in terms of settings. It should help the process of elimination. :)

Eh, it's becoming awkward, really... I also tried hdmi_force_hotplug=1 ...
I tried the whole instructions set, I guess. There must be a combination which is gonna work, but I'm in a cul de sac, right now.
Just to test it again, I connected the RPi with the same HDMI cable and PSU to my Samsung 32" with exactly the same config.txt and it's perfect.

These set the correct 1024x768 resolution on the Plasma LG
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=16

This one does absolutely nothing, from 0 to 11
config_hdmi_boost=6

tried these too, no difference either on or off
avoid_edid_fuzzy_match=1
hdmi_ignore_cec=1

This one prevents the LG TV from giving black screen with "no signal" after booting with the red screen:
hdmi_edid_file=1

And this one is the only one which slightly affects colors: 0 or RGB (1,2) give red screen. 3,4 (YCbCr) give a pink screen :-)
hdmi_pixel_encoding=1

These up here are just an example, I spent the whole afternoon changing any sort of values with zero results.

Did you try 'hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080'?

Sadly, yes. With no outcome at all. I think it's time to consider giving up trying to make my Rpi work with this Plasma LG TV.
I'd rather use it for something else, I guess. Plenty of projects out there.
Thanks everyone for your support and assistance.
