256 MB model not working ?

Wed Apr 23, 2014 8:10 pm

Hi there.
I have been using 256 MB model with Raspbian for many months. I did some update on April 15th (openssl patch ?, don't remember) without a reboot. Today I needed to reboot (after 97 days uptime) and raspi did not come up. When I put the SD card into another raspberry, which is 512 MB, it worked. I also tried SD card from the 512 MB model (running rasbmc) in my 256 MB model and it worked.
So to me it looks like some update broke support of 256 MB model. When I look into /boot directory, I can see file sizes and timestamps are different before and after April 15th (I have backups from each Monday).

Is it something to be expected ? I am not following raspbian forums for some time as my raspi was working without any hickup for a looooong time. And I did not find anything when I tried to search today.

Thank you

Which 256Mb model (B1 or A)? I don't often update/upgrade** my B1 (2012 vintage, with the USB polyfuses) because (all) I use it for is a MoinMoin wiki from which I export the RasPi section of my webpages (ie. if it ain't broke, don't fix it), but I do update/upgrade** my model A quite often (~monthly) and haven't had any issues.

** via sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade only.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

I have a B1 256M and a B2 256MB. I regularly run apt-get update/upgrade and rpi-update and have had no problems with either. Both are currently running raspbian 3.10.37+.

I think (TM) I did apt-get update, no upgrade and then updated openssl only. And I am sure I did not do rpi-update, that could be the problem. Btw, how do I find out which specific version of 256MB rpi do I have ?

Lets see if I can get this right without looking it up.

Model B1: The first model B. Has (green) fuses F1 and F2 near the LEDs
Model B1.1: Updated model B. Has (black) links for F1 and F2, marked with a "0" on top.
Model B2: Very rare 256MB version. Has no F1 or F2. Has two "mounting" holes on the board.
Model A: Has only 1 USB socket and no Ethernet socket. IC3 is missing.

If you could get it booted you could check the Revision number from "cat /proc/cpuinfo", from which you can work out the Model and Manufacturer. There is a forum post that lists all the know values, but as yours won't boot there is no point in me finding it right now.

Have you tried a fresh install on your 256 Mb Pi? It's possible that there was an SD card corruption that doesn't affect the other Pi in the same way.
