Ethernet is not working :(

Tue Apr 22, 2014 1:38 am

So i have the Model B, Revision 1 board, and no matter what OS, and no matter what cable, I CANNOT get the ethernet to work on my pi /: I've read that there have been problems with the crystal (x1), but I am a dud when it comes to my soldering skills. Also, usb is working just fine. Can anyone tell me whats up, and maybe how to fix it?

If the USB is working - keyboard, mouse, etc. - then there isn't a problem with the crystal, or at least the main part of the USB/Ethernet chip.
Revision 1 is quite old, now. Do you know its history? Could there be damage to the RJ45 socket?

What's on the other end of the ethernet cable?

What Burngate said + what, if any, LEDS light up? Anything in the log (dmesg output)?

As far as history of the board, it's never suffered any damage or anything, and I am the only one who has ever used it. My modem (Net gear N450 CG3000Dv2) is on the other end of the ethernet cable. I know the modem works because I tested all my ethernet cables. I guess it has taken me this long to find out I couldn't get ethernet because I havent really been able to use it.

How would I look at dmesg? (I'm a novice with Linux currently. I'm trying to fix that)

Also, the only LED that lights up is power, and sometimes the LED that is labled OK.

To view dmesg, using command dmesg on its own will print all the boot log data in one go, but then most will scroll off the top of the screen. You can save it to a file using dmesg > dmesg.txt for example and then view it with a text editor. An alternative which will enable you to scroll back and forth through the dmesg data is to use the command dmesg | less and you can scroll through the data using the up and down arrow keys to look for problems, then type q to quit.

Are you using this headless or do you have a screen attached?

Check inside the ethernet connector (on the Pi) for a mis-aligned or bent pin. The LEDs for ethernet should come on very shortly after power is applied IIRC _IF_ both ends are connected. Try pushing the connector all the way in to see if that makes a difference.

The dmesg command will tell you a lot of stuff about what the kernel detected during boot up.

The pi is hooked up to my Samsung TV via hdmi, so it isn't headless. I did check the Ethernet connect, and there were know misaligned or bent pins. The light blinked real fast once on startup, but that was it. Also, in case it helps, i am currently using Pidora.

Here is dmesg (Because it wouldnt let me attach a .txt file):

Re: Ethernet is not working :(

Code: Select all

[ 152.174807] smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0: eth0: register 'smsc95xx' at usb-bcm2708_usb-1.1, smsc95xx USB 2.0 Ethernet, b8:27:eb:4f:39:21
You can see the SMSC9512/9514 coming active in that dmesg output.

So first thing is check the cable. Ethernet uses pins 1,2,3 & 6 (white/green, green/white, white/orange and orange/white if it's 568A or white/orange, orange/white, white/green & green/white if it's 568B).

If you don't have a cable tester, disable the wireless on your laptop and wire it to your router/switch/cable modem.

You can also use your laptop to connect to your RPi.

Edit /boot/cmdline.txt

Code: Select all

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait quiet
gets updated to

Code: Select all

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait quiet ip=169.254.3.14
boot up with that, connect the cable to your laptop and attempt to ping 169.254.3.14 (or ssh using PuTTY to 169.254.3.14).

Do you mean connect to the pi via ethernet from my computer to the pi?

Yes.

It's as quick a way to check your RPi and the cable as any. It removes a layer of complication. If the hardware works you should get pretty leds winking on both ends.

If the ping works then you know that the RPi is good to go and you need to look at your router/switch/cable modem.

You can also test with the laptop wired to the router/switch/cable modem to try to narrow down the root cause of your problems.

So I tried it, and assuming I did it right, it didnt work. Igot a "General Failure". I know that cable works, and the modem works fine because I have ran the cable from the modem to my pc, and disabled the wireless and still got a solid connection.

Before I did you method though, it seemed like It was trying to get a Connection. I was getting what sorta looked like swirling circles, then it would say it couldn't connect, and it bounced back and forth like that for a while, but I'm not sure why it suddenly tried to work. Is the pi just shot? Should I try replaced the ethernet connector? Or could it even be a distributor problem?

I'm not a fan of GUIs, so 99.9% of stuff that happens on my RPis is done from the command line.

First thing to look at is the power supply. The USB/Ethernet has a 300mA drain, if your supply is marginal that can be a cause of unexpected failures.

Then from a software / operating system perspective (I'm assuming you're running Raspbian or NOOBS/Raspbian) we need to look at how you've got the interfaces configured.

cat /etc/network/interfaces
ifconfig -a
route -n

I'm assuming you've got the RPi set-up to request a DHCP address from your network (which means we send some funky bootp packets out on to the LAN segment and hope that a DHCP server shouts back with a dhcp lease (and other stuff)).

We can use nmap to look for those bootp packets (although it gets difficult if you don't have a network connection trying to install the nmap package - as it can be a chicken & egg problem).

Lots of messages get logged to /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/messages and/or /var/log/syslog which can give some clues as to what's going wrong. We get folks posting camera shots with those when they can't get connected to do a cut'n'paste on to here.

So we have a plan, starting with your power supply.
