404 Error with Apt-Get

First off, apologies as I am a complete newbie to Raspbian. That being said, I have spent the last two days trying to add Shairport to my Raspberry Pi to create an Airplay receiver. To that end, I have been following the Lifehacker instructions at this link: http://lifehacker.com/5978594/turn-a-ra ... iving-room

Unfortunately, the process seems to break down as I try to install the dependencies for Shairport (ie. When I execute: sudo apt-get install git libao-dev libssl-dev libcrypt-openssl-rsa-perl libio-socket-inet6-perl libwww-perl avahi-utils libmodule-build-perl.

Once I do this, I get the following error:

I had initially tried this using the NOOB install and then tried the Raspbian install found here: http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbi ... 014-01-09/

I cannot for the life of me figure out what is wrong. I have even tried to change the mirror site in the source list with no luck. In the latest install I completed update and upgrade but found that the /etc/apt/source.list file was missing for some reason and ended up creating one using this site as the mirror: http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/archive.ra ... e/raspbian. Even still, apt-get seems to still default to the mirrordirector site that causes the 404 error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try
sudo apt-get update
to ensure you're pointing at the right mirrors.

Hi Dougie,

I've executed sudo apt-get update as well as sudo apt-get --fix-missing but I am still running into the same 404 error when I try to download the dependencies.

In my sources list just have:

Then on a fresh install

sodo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The file names/versions and the mirror address all look good to me. I just downloaded one of those "404" files using wget and the same information. Perhaps there is a mirror out there that is only partly synced with the rest?

The mirrordirector is supposed to redirect your request to a localish mirror to spread the load a bit. The one my request was directed to was mirror0.it.ox.ac.uk Perhaps if you replaced "mirrordirector.raspbian.org" with that and try the apt-get update again, then try the install.

I am going to try and do a fresh install of Raspbian and see if that helps. But thought I'd ask in the meantime in case I have to go to a manual download and install process.

Im also experiencing the same error when installing python-dev. I try to open th url which apt-get cannot find. The file is there but when downloading, it redirect to another mirror which the file is not exist. In my case its just one package not found. So i just download the deb package from another mirror using wget, then i install it manually using dpkg -i. My guess is the issue is coming from the mirrordirector.raspbian.org but not too sure.

The command I used was

wget http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/pool/main/g/geoip/libgeoip1_1.4.8+dfsg-3_armhf.deb
You can change the "mirrordirector.raspbian.org" for a specific mirror if that fails.

You can then install the file using dpkg

sudo dpkg -i libgeoip1_1.4.8+dfsg-3_armhf.deb
But that might complain about missing dependencies. An alternative way is to move the file(s) into /var/cache/apt/archives and then run the apt-get install command again. It will realise that the files are already where it wants them to be and skip trying to download them again.

rpdom: You were right! I changed the mirrordirector entry in /etc/apt/sources.list to the following:

deb http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/archive.raspbian.org/archive/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi
and then executed

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and it worked like a charm. All of the subsequent downloades executed without any problems.

As you alluded to you in your earlier note, it seems as though some of the mirrors are not fully in sync and as a result, I was not getting all of the packages.

I'd leave it until tomorrow evening when folks have been back at work for a full day after Easter and all of their processes that failed over the long weekend have been restarted.

Having to mess with the name of the mirror could simply lead to unexpected errors later.

I agree, but as a "get it working for now" fix, it works. Later the sources.list should be changed back to the standard entry.
