Unable to boot - tried all that I know

Tue Apr 08, 2014 6:57 pm

I have just a red light glowing. I have read and tried the boot sticky, tested my voltage and the fuse and all appears fine, I have sd formatted and tried 2 different mem cards (8gb and a 16gb), written the noobs files to the mem card, used dd and put a raspbian image on both cards, used tried it with and without usb kb and mouse connected, with and without ethernet connection, replaced ethernet cord, Win32diskimager to write those image files (looked fine when later viewed), tried a different SD writer, tried it with and without HDMI, tried 2 different monitors. My question is..Is my unit dead? Not one thing that I have tried has changed it in any way that I can tell. Are there any other options or is my Pi dead?

If you've never seen "even a hint of" green led ACtivity then the only other thing I can think of that you haven't mentioned is a visual inspection of the SD card socket. Is the card going full home and activating the card detect switch? Are there any bent or flattened pins? Although there have been no reports for quite some time, there have been mechanical failures of the socket** in the past and also "contact failure" due to cards "bowing" or being "misaligned" by pressure from "case slots" etc.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Thanks for the response. I checked the card detect switch and it appears to function, as least when I check with my meter. The pins look okay and I even tried with a slight bit of pressure applied with a thin knife to the back of the mem card. No glow or flicker of any kind on the other LEDs.

Can I get some information about the SD cards? Are they class 4?

Also, have you tried updating the files inside the card? I believe that updates for a few pieces of it have been releases and include better card support.

Finally, have you tried it with different operating systems?

Either your PI (or its power supply) is defective, or you never managed to produce a bootable card.
I think the chances are about 50/50% the problem is a non bootable card.
People tend to make the same error over and over again when creating the card, often something simple like not unpacking the .zip file, or putting the files in a folder, instead of directly in the root of the card.

You could try simply buying a pre-written card from the swag store:
http://swag.raspberrypi.org/collections ... gb-sd-card

If that doesn't boot it, (without any peripherals) the testpoints are 5V, and the card holder isn't broken, then it should be a hardware defect (other than a broken card holder). But the chances it is are extremely rare, unless you managed to blow it up.
One thing is sure, at one point it did work, (during factory testing).

I am having a similar problem.. I purchased my card a year and a half ago; and today it just stop working. I can no longer boot it. Followed all instructions above, all I get is a SOLID RED LIGHT (Power only). I do have a 'very faint' GREEN LIGHT.

***Update***** The SD CARD was NOT seated correctly. I had to 'force' a piece of 'business card' stock size paper in the socket to keep the SD CARD seated and (terminal connection) in place. This is the only "long term" fix I could think of.
