Can't get win32diskimager to work on WinXP Laptops

Hi,

Anyone else out there figured out how to get a laptop running xp to register the sd card in win32diskimager? Mine just shows a blank list. If I plug a usb stick in, it shows up, but the sd card slot doesn't.

I suspect I will need to get a USB card reader, but it's annoying since I have two laptops with built in readers, and neither shows up in win32diskimager.

Anyone figured out how to make it work, then please let me know!

I received my Pi over a week ago but only just had the chance to set it up, tried multiple laptop SD Card Readers (built in) and none worked, all returned an error (error 5, if I remember correctly), I then tried an SD Card Reader (USB) and it mounted the image to the SD Card straight away, problem solved. I don't have a solution for you, other than to use a USB SD Card Reader.

I too had a problem when I tried the built-in reader in my (Windows 7) laptop. An external reader on my Windows XP desktop worked perfectly. There seems to be something missing on the internal readers; they work OK to download pictures from your camera card, but they don't work with Win32 Disk Imager for some reason.

There's indeed an issue with the drive detection in win32diskimager.
Until that's fixed, if it doesn't detect your laptop SD drive, simply use flashnul instead.

I've "downgraded" win32diskimager to the first version. With that it works fine with Laptop built-in SD Card reader.

Perhaps the solution is to upgrade to Windows 7? I am a novice when it comes to almost any IT task but I managed to download Win 32 Image Writer Version 0.0.0.4 and used it to write the Wheezy Raspbian img file onto a card and booted up the Pi for the first time without any problems. Windows was running on a laptop with a built in card reader.

Concur, I didn't realize the problem was WinXP but I guess it is, and using the older version of win32diskimager worked like a charm. The newer version doesn't detect the SD card reader on my laptop.

Theres been probs with onboard readers lots have solved this with the old Poundland USB SD cardreader fix.

Sorry if you are not UK and don't have access to a poundland.

It cost me more to park than it cost for two cardreaders.

I now have a poundland in walking range.

Thank you wptm, I was cracking my head over this from 2 days.. I am on XP on laptop with the built in SD Card reader. Atleast now the diskImager detects the drive and its writing. Can't tell if it will work, awaiting my pi.

I am using XP pro and have used XP Home with Win32DiskImage several times on each both to read and write multiple SD cards for the RPi sucessfully.

If your PC will boot from a flash drive try a Linux lite distro eg Puppy

Thank you all for the helpful topic. I'd like to update on this.
Win32DiskImager (v0.7 and v0.6) cannot detect built-in card reader device on Windows Vista laptop either.
The solution is to use older version of the software, e.g. v0.1. And this may be tricky, as the developers do not provide older versions anymore. I managed to find one here - http://code.google.com/p/learn-gdx/down ... p&can=2&q=
It did the trick.

With my dell xp laptop, inspiron, l have to use a SD to USB card reader, the program won't recognise the SD card in the SD slot

The only solution is to use an older version of Win32diskmanager, worked for me in XP, Vista & 7...the newest official release writes but refuses to read...so I have gone retro

I think you may find it's the in built card reader I have never had an issue with a USB2.0 external but I have had it fail with on board card readers on three occasions in three different machines that all worked perfectly when I went over to the USB reader.
