What Would You Like to See?

Mon Mar 10, 2014 10:07 pm

Hello,

I'm LordOfSpoon. Everyones seems to call me LoS. Rather than posting an introduction in the correct introduction thread I need to get straight to the point. I've been a web design/developer for around 9 years. I work with forums and wordpress mainly and some cms. I just recently bought a couple Rpi's and would like to ask a few question and get some feed back from this community.

I greatly appreciate your comments. So please, take some time to read and tell me what you think. Now to the main reason.

I am looking to find a way to make the Rpi case better. I see a lot of people buying Rpi's not only to mess with and create their ow DIY projects but to actually have something cool to show off and simply just play with lol. I understand the point of Rpi is to be compact, small, and simple. But I look at the cases out on the market now and can't help but think most are a little boring. Some are really cool don't get me wrong. Here is what I would like to do:

I want to design a small, sleek, cable managed desktop Rpi. I've seen some people create one themselves but they are to painstaking and not cost efficient. For example; one annoying thing is how the cables are connected on every side of the board. The case would need an I/O shield to make cable management simple. What I need from you all if feedback on what you would like to see in a case that is "desktop worthy" but still easy to pick up and move.

Could not agree more about moving cables to one side: http://www.cupidcontrols.com/2014/02/making-of-a-cupid/

A case that would have enough room to mount a LCD display would be nice.

Space to fit a Gertboard, and one that is easily opened, but not too loose that it just falls out.

Sorry to keep posting my own crap. I really like these cases though. Room for sensors inside , bulletproof, nema-rated until you put holes in them, pcb mounts...

I'd like to see a slimline case large enough to house a Pi along with a 3.5" HDD + USB controller, as well as all connectors on the back including at least 4 USB 2.0 ports. I've been drawing up rough plans here to make a one-off, and 250x250x25mm internal dimensions seems to do it without cramming parts in too tightly.

My primary use will be to slide it under the TV stand as an all-in-one media centre, but it'd provide a large enough footprint to stand most LCD monitors on top of too, so I could see a place for a case like this on a computer desktop. :)
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

On my usual (Model A) raaspi, the only cables I use are an HDMI, the single USB (which I run to a hub if I need more) and power which connects to the case, not the tiny power plug. So, I have HDMI and power on the rear and USB (keyboard connector) on one side. And a bit of wiring for the power (and backup batteries) concealed inside. That works OK for my desk.

But I admit it you're right, if you want something tidy that allows access to more of the connectors, you need quite a big box with some spaghetti inside. I suppose this is why so many people are DIYing with their own boxes.

How about... some sort of tall and thin, book-sized case that stands on little legs or a stand of some sort... so connections could be made to the top, bottom and rear in a fairly tidy manner. Not sure... :?:

Rather than winding wires, it made more sense to me to isolate power on the USB using a board. It's no more work, really, and saves space overall. Then you can power through the header and fuse it as well. The power limitation on USB is a pretty big concern in my book, and if you isolate power, you can use unpowered hubs, which these days are about $1 from china.

Loving the feedback guys. So far my plans are to create a small desktop PC looking case that can fit up to two Rpi's and maybe up to 4 USB ports, including power, hdmi, ethernet, etc. Also a front panel for Power Button(s), two usb 2.0 ports, and audio. The reason I think it should be able to hold two Rpi's instead of just one would be, well, for any reason you would want two lol more power :) lol

mmm, sounds intresting. Maybe include a slot for a hard disk or 2? then it would make the perfect case for a server or any data heavy application :)
