There is a list of working and non working Peripherals on the Wiki Page - have a check on there ;)

Hi

I have the same question but I would prefer not to use a powered hub and the Wiki list doesn't tell me whether the keyboard and mouse specifically requires one.

It just mentions "Please be aware that some of these keyboards were probably used with a powered hub" which doesn't really help me much.

Cheers

I've updated the (not my original) entry for the two keyboard models I've used:

Dell:
SK-8135 (B) (Rated 1.5A. Takes too much power from pi even when not used as USB hub. Symptom = repeated keystrokes)
SK-8115 (B) (Rated 100mA. Works directly in pi)

I have had no problems with the 8115. It's a good sturdy keyboard too. Takes a lot of abuse (think utube Angry German Kid).

That's strange, I also have a K400 and it kernel panics when I hit the enter button.

In the spirit of a £30 embedded computer, I used a £5 ASDA keyboard and a £2.50 ASDA mouse. Both wok fine. Although if you plug them both into the onboard USB ports, there's nothing left for anything else. So I'd suggest splashing out for a £1.50 4-port USB hub - the sort with 4 USB connectors on short leads.
The first USB hub I tried crashed my RPi, but this one works fine.

I have also a Logitech K400, but I can't boot up when the WIFI dongle is connected during startup. If I plug it in, when the login screen appears, it works normally. I tried to use a USB 2.0 HUB with external power supply, but then I have the problem with repeating keystrokes...

Mine does also, although I haven't actually tried Arch yet, as I intend to concentrate on Wheezy for a bit!

For anyone interested, I'm using an Argos value wireless deskset which comes with a mouse, keyboard and small dongle that sits nicely in the pi. Currently on sale for £10 and works fine with Debian.
