Are you saying that you've connected your Pi and laptop together with an HDMI cable, or that you've connected both to a monitor via separate HDMI cables?
If it's the former then you're connecting an output to an output, so you won't get a picture.
If it's the latter then there must be a button on the monitor somewhere to select between its HDMI inputs.
