Confused: Element 14 Power Question?

Wed May 30, 2012 10:10 pm

I'm a little confused now, the Element 14 document that came with my PI says that the power supply should provide a 'Maximum current' of 500mA, and yet the faq here says 700mA as ideal.

I was just in the electronics store and most of the chargers Iooked at say they are 5V but 1Amp.

My own personal phone charger is 5V 400mA.

Gah. Would the 1Amp chargers be too much power?

If I remember my electronics classes correctly. Have too many Amps makes no difference to the PI since the pi will only draw what is needed. It's the voltage that can't be any higher.

Infact having a supply that can provide more amps is better since the supply won't be running at max and so it's life should be longer.

That being said it is about 10 years since I did any electronics.

Yes, maximum makes no sense.
The supply should be a minimum of 700mA. More is fine.

This was first noted mid April ... http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 6&start=25

Perhaps someone should advise Element14 their documentation is incorrect.
