STICKY: Free Java on RaspberryPi training course from Oracle

Thu Feb 20, 2014 10:16 am

Hi,

Oracle have announced a free 6 week training course titled 'Develop Java Applications Using a Raspberry Pi' starting on March 31st. 4-6 hours of material will be released every week and since the course contains prerecorded sessions, it can viewed anytime.

See the link for full details: https://blogs.oracle.com/java/entry/dev ... ns_using_a
The Oracle Learning Library has created this course which provides code, examples, and experts to teach you and answer your questions.

Java experts Stephen Chin, Jim Weaver, Simon Ritter, Angela Caicedo, and Tom McGinn will lead you through basic exercises. Each week, you'll get a new set of course materials:

•A series of short, pre-recorded videos provide the "lecture" portion of the course.
•A homework project is linked to the video material, and applies what you have learned by working with Java ME Embedded, the Raspberry Pi, and some electronic components.
•A graded quiz evaluates how well you have grasped the materials and the homework.
Have fun!

Must have been very transient, or localised. OK in the UK at the time of writing this reply.

Hello all Raspberry Pi fans,
I am completing this coure now and am on the last week and I have enjoyed it immensely.
One programmes under Wib 8 using Netbeans and the oracle Java ME compiler.
After compiling you can send the prograame to either a virtual device or the Raspberry Pi.

I think the course material may well be left on internet to contact Oracle to see if viewing the Videos and downloading the prograames is possible. Well worth the effort.

You do need to buy a HW kit from Adafruit (GPS, Temperature/Humidity) , switches and LEDs.
and you learn about connecting the devices into project.
I2C (Temp/humidity) and SPI (GPS) are treated in detail.
A really good course but does need a java background .
I do not know when the next course is , so contact Oralcle on this as well.

I am also looking into other cross compiler/degbugger for C and C++. undr Win8
If anyone has any experience there I'd like to hear from you.

All the best to you all

4.7.2014

Oracle course:
You could try registeringg in Oracle, then going to the Course page :https://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=44 ... 1841%2C143
I do not know if you can then get to the lesson material, but there is a FAQ und also access the forum.
There you can ask when the next course if access to he course material is denied.
You will need the Adafruit HW package

I have access and could write to Oracle MOOC Forum on your behalf if all else fails

Hello all,
Oracle have made the Java Course freely available under
https://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=44 ... 144%2C1031

In order to complete this course a background of Java - especially Classes and sub-classes is necessary and buying a kit of sensors etc from Adafruit.
The course is really worth while doing , one learns aboat threading, I2C,SPI, and Serial
Interfaces and how to update the Java programmes (called Imlets)
All the sensors+programmes are then built in a main Project.

Well worth looking at!

I think that perhaps a new topic for the Java course ought to be created to exchange ideas and problems....
and would to hear what you all think.
Bye

Does anyone know if the download (the javame8 subdirectory for the pi and the Netbeans add on for the PC) for this course will work on the B+ and with the new Raspbian image released this month (Sep 2014). In particular, will it allow access to the extra GPIO pins?

Hello,

Is it possible to use examples of the prototype for a (classroom) course in other language?

Always keeping the authors of the work.

Best regards.
