TNC-Pi with GPS

Tue Feb 11, 2014 11:36 pm

So I recently recieved my TNC-Pi and made up the board and connected it up to my radio... all working fine, and it recieves data perfectly and plots it onto a map in xastir. So I can use this whilst mobile to transmit my location I have added a usb GPS dongle into the equation but I cant seem to get it to work whilst xastir is installed? If xastir is uninstalled then the gps works perfectly using gpsd.but wont show any data when xastir is installed.......
Can anyone tell me how to get the two devices running incognito?
Thanks in advance and 73's

Callum,
There's an updated manual for the TNC-Pi (Jan '14) on John W2FS's website.
Default is to use serial port connection, so to use ,e.g. Adafruit ultimate GPS on UART tnc has to connect via i2c.
Follow instructions in the manual to edit cmdline.txt and inittab files, and how to set up i2ckiss.
You'll need John's params.zip file to tweak i2c settings.
Any problems get back to me I'll reply in a few days.

Edit: just spotted it's a USB GPS you have - try setting xastir to listen to gpsd on localhost:2947 first
Before trying i2ckiss.

Assuming you already have gpsd already running, start xastir, then go to
Interface > interface control > add > networked GPS (via gpsd)
Gpsd host : localhost
Gpsd port : 2947
Comment. :
Then options for activate on startup/reconnect on failure/set system clock from GPS data
I use online OSM_cloud made maps
Map > map chooser > highlight online/OSM_cloudmade_1.geo > apply >OK, then close popup window.
Also read the man pages for gpsd.

Callum,
Did you manage to get your GPS talking to Xastir via gpsd?
Hope to bring TNC-PI to raynet deployment in may ( rx-only for medical team, & with HDMI pi for my vehicle)

Paul,
Sorry it's taken a while haven't had time to have a play with the Pi for a while! Still no luck! Can't get gpsd to run at all without uninstalling xastir. Haven't tried i2ckiss yet, but will it work considering I have a usb gps and not on the gpio pins?

Found a forum post how to start gpsd at boot:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/viewto ... 45&t=53644

i2ckiss uses the i2c interface, so is only applicable to TNC-Pi, not USB GPS.
If you need console output on serial UART then edit files per the manual & use i2c, otherwise tnc can stay on serial.
Once gpsd is running & your GPS is sending data (there are packages to display results), you can create a networked GPS in Xastir.
You should then see two interface icons bottom right on Xastir screen, the GPS interface will show constant bursts of incoming data & the tnc interface will indicate traffic incoming/outgoing. If interface stays red it's gone into error(as shown in interface control menu)
